Stravinsky - Petrushka Ballet Suite

This list is about the Petrushka Ballet Suite by Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971). Composed between 1910 and 1911 (then later revised in 1946), the Ballet is a masterwork that combines music, dance and set design. It premiered on June 13, 1911 and was considered a great triumph, so much so that the majority of all subsequent performances (in an effort, no doubt, to not mess with success) have kept the original choreography and décor. The Ballet's story has its origins with the composer who had a vision of a puppet who came to life. After struggling to come up with a name, he settled on Petrushka, a Russian name for a well-known puppet from stories found in almost every culture across Europe. (In England, he's called Punch...from Punch and Judy. In France, it's Polichinelle. And in Italy, Pulcinella.) The rest of the Ballet's story comes from the help of Alexandre Benois (1870-1960). Benois set the story at a Russian carnival fair. At the fair, amidst acrobats and animal acts, a magician casts a spell that brings three of his dolls to life. One of the dolls is Petrushka, a sad and awkward clown, while the swashbuckling Moor and the petite ballerina make up the rest of the trio. Petrushka falls madly in love with the ballerina, but she spurns his advances and falls, instead, for the Moor. A fight for her love ensues and the Moor kills Petrushka. The ballet ends with the spirit of Petrushka hovering above the magician, angrily taunting him for bringing him to life.
