This week's free download is the Holberg Suite, Op. 40 by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). Composed in 1884, its proper title is translated as "From Holberg's Time" and was written to commemorate the birth of 18th-century Dano-Norwegian playwright and philosopher Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754). Subtitled "Suite in olden style", it is a neo-Romantic interpretation of the Baroque dance music popular during Holberg's life.
Originally composed for piano, Grieg re-worked it in 1885 into the more well-known version for string orchestra. Perhaps not as popular as his Peer Gynt Suites, the Holberg Suite garners much praise due to Grieg’s skill at mimicking the different Baroque forms in each movement while melding them seamlessly with his own unmistakable style.
The selections are from a 1994 recording by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields conducted by Sir Neville Marriner.
