Mendelssohn - String Quartet No. 2 in A minor

This list discusses the String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13 by German composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Written in the fall of 1827 when he was 18 years old, it is considered one of the most notable examples in music of the cyclic form technique. The technique employs a central melody or theme that appears in one or more movements of a multimovement piece in order to unify the sections as a whole. Although Mendelssohn is not as celebrated for his songs, they often influenced his other music; the melody that Mendelssohn uses in this quartet is a three-note motif borrowed from his song ‘Frage’ from opus 9. The motif starts and ends the piece like musical bookends and variations of the motif appear in the middle movements, as well. It also seems important to Mendelssohn that the full song itself, not just the motif, be seen as linked to the quartet because a score of the song was included with the quartet’s original publication. 1827 also saw the release of Beethoven’s late string quartet scores. Panned by critics and the general public, Mendelssohn loved the works and was profoundly influenced by them, particularly by Beethoven’s use of the cyclic form technique. Picking up where Beethoven left off, Mendelssohn pushed Beethoven’s use of the form even further in his 2nd String Quartet.
